Common questions

Pregnancy sciatica FAQs

What does pregnancy sciatica feel like?

A shooting, burning, or electric pain that starts in the buttock or low back and travels down the back of one leg — sometimes with tingling or numbness. It's usually one-sided, and it often flares with sitting, standing up, or climbing stairs.

Why does pregnancy bring on sciatic pain?

In most pregnancies it's not a disc problem — it's muscle. As posture shifts and the pelvis loosens, the glutes and deep hip rotators (especially the piriformis, which sits right over the sciatic nerve) tighten up and irritate the nerve underneath. The baby's position and general swelling can add to the pressure in the third trimester.

Can prenatal massage relieve sciatica?

Often, yes — because the usual culprit is muscular. Releasing tension in the glutes, piriformis, and low back takes pressure off the irritated nerve, which is why many people notice the shooting pain ease after treatment. Results vary, and stubborn cases may also benefit from physiotherapy alongside massage.

What can I do at home when it flares?

Lie on the side that doesn't hurt with a pillow between your knees, take short walking breaks rather than long sits, and try gentle hip and glute stretches within a comfortable range. Warmth on the buttock can settle a flare; avoid anything that makes the leg pain worse.

When is leg pain something to get checked?

Contact your doctor or midwife promptly if you notice spreading numbness or weakness in the leg, or swelling, warmth, and pain in one calf — one-sided calf swelling needs medical attention right away to rule out a blood clot. Sciatica also tends to travel with pelvic and hip trouble; our pelvic & hip pain guide covers that overlap.
